For all opportunities, please email screwgallery@gmail.com with your name and chosen opportunity as the subject.

We prefer to have everything as Google docs or pdfs, with images uploaded to an accessible Google drive folder and video/audio files available for streaming. If you'd like to send your application as an audio file, please include this in a Google drive folder and link to it. Thanks!

SCREW GALLERY ASSISTANT SKILL SHARE

We’re looking for a few volunteers to help out with basic tasks at the gallery over the course of 2022 on a skill-share basis. Volunteers will be expected to make a commitment of 3 months to support the gallery for five hours a week. Tasks are primarily going to consist of invigilation and install assistance but could also extend to experience in marketing, curation, PR etc.

In exchange we can offer an equal return in support hours as a skill-share. This opportunity particularly suits students or those with flexible employment who are looking to gain experience in the running of artist-led organisations as well as grass roots curatorial programming. Our team of directors have exhibited worldwide, contributed to major publications and undertaken a variety of residencies, commissions and successful grant applications aside from our work with SCREW and are happy to share our experiences with willing participants.

Examples of what we can offer in terms of skill sharing would include help with postgraduate applications, residency applications, invoicing, freelance contacts and support, funding applications locally and nationally as well as any practical skills you may observe and want to learn - from painting and printmaking to photography, animation or sound design.

SCREW U

SCREW U is a regular opportunity for you to use our gallery space to realise your own ideas. Set over a weekend, we provide the gallery free of charge for exhibitions, workshops, pop-ups and anything else that you think might fit with our space and ethos.

To be considered for SCREW U, email us a proposal outlining your idea, timeline etc. If you need help with a proposal or would like to talk to us before submitting something, you're always welcome to send an email or drop by the gallery in person during opening hours.

The proposal should outline your project, timeline and preferred month. The weekends are allocated and not flexible, so it’s best to consider projects which aren’t time sensitive.

Before contacting us, please take a look at our programme and the artists who coordinate the space. Think about whether your idea fits with what we do and how executing it at SCREW could benefit you, as well as the city of Leeds. We look forward to hearing from you.

SCREW DEGREE SHOW 2022

THIS OPPORTUNITY IS OPEN TO ARTISTS STUDYING IN LEEDS GRADUATING EITHER IN 2020, 2021 OR 2022.

Most of the people involved in SCREW studied in Leeds and we chose to open our gallery here because we love this city and believe in its potential to contribute to contemporary art on a global scale.

Across all arts disciplines, Leeds churns out thousands of graduates a year and Universities barely offer any preparation for what life as a working artist is actually like. We want to support graduates with an opportunity to exhibit their work, as well as with three months of mentoring from our team and invited professionals, including the artists exhibiting in our 2022 programme.

What we’re looking for at this stage is an expression of interest consisting of an email with a link to a google drive folder containing up to 10 images/recordings/files/whatever of your work and an artist statement up to 700 words. The artist statement does not need to be a formal document, it can be a rambling mess of words, a poem or a voice note - it’s just to give us a brief introduction to what you do and what inspires you.

Artists longlisted at this stage will be contacted in February to arrange studio visits where two of our team will come to your studio to see work in person, following which selected artists will be shortlisted for a second studio visit and participants informed following degree show presentations.

If you graduated in 2020 or 2021 and didn’t get a degree show, please don’t worry, you won’t be penalised for not having had the opportunity to get professional install shots in a pristine gallery space. This is about your work, not the access to opportunities you’ve had in the past.

Please keep in mind that the best way to support your application is to be present at the gallery! Be part of the volunteer programme, come to openings, talk to us about the work and tell us what you think.

Selected artists will be supported with a small stipend, the exact amount will be allocated at the time of your offer.
